I love exfoliation. I believe it is essential for healthy skin and something all skin types need.
However, it can be dangerous territory if you don’t exfoliate, if you over exfoliate or if you use the wrong product for your skin type.
The biggest problem I see in the salon during skin consultations is that people avoid exfoliation as they have experienced skin sensitivity in the past.
My general rule, depending on skin type, is to do it twice a week. Very oily or acne prone skin will need to increase this.
When you don’t exfoliate skin becomes dull, there is no glow or skin health and it can lead to congestion.
What exfoliator is best?
My top selling product at JOS is asap daily exfoliating facial scrub. It suits everyone and I can’t keep it on the shelf. (Even though it says daily I still recommend 2-3 times a week)
200ml €40
50ml €20

Here are a few reasons it’s so popular:
-Fragrance and oil free
-Non pore clogging formula
-14 % glycolic acid
-Smooth, round biodegradable beads ( which won’t rear your skin and is good for the environment)
You mix a small amount of this with water and massage into the skin. Wash off and smooth, fresh skin will be revealed.
Enzyme based exfoliators are also lovely where enzymes gobble up the dead skin, so a great option for sensitive skin.
The only exfoliator I urge people to avoid are heavy beaded ones ( yep, I’m talking about you apricot scrub). These large beads can leave micro tears on your skin which is not good.
So if you have been avoiding fresh skin get a suitable exfoliator and after 2 weeks of using, you will see a huge difference in skin health.
Don’t forget to book in for a free skin consultation if you are unsure where to start
